Back To School Time Has Arrived

It is that time of year once again when children are heading off to school  a place teeming with people with germs. These germs are continually transmitted, wildly multiplying on any surface that is touched by human hands. Doorknobs, drinking fountains, bathrooms, and any other surface that is regularly touched will have germs on it. Even if the parents are not working in a public place, school-aged children will bring the germs of sickness back into the home — the cold and flu season will start its vicious cycle once again.

What can you do as a parent to help your family stay healthy?

Make sure your children are well-rested (as well as yourself). While you sleep your body is actually helping build your immune system. When you are well rested your chances of staying healthy are much better than if you are feeling tired or fatigued. Well rested for a child is at least 8 hours of sleep and 10 hours is even better for children. While adults can function well on six to eight hours children are still growing and thy need more.

Teach your children to keep their hands clean and wash regularly. When children do activities together they are more prone to transfer germs to one another. If they will wash their hands after group activities they will rinse the germs away. Since children are always putting their hands on things including their faces and in their mouths it is a good rule of thumb to have them wash their hands seven times per day! Medical standards say washing hands seven times per day will almost completely cut your chances of getting a cold. It is also very important to wash your hands before you handle food. If you are going to have a meal or a snack, wash your hands first!

Sharing has its limits. Remind your children not to drink from cups or soda cans or any other container after other children. Children should also avoid using another person's comb or brush because viruses, bacteria and head lice can be transferred this way.

Get moving. Believe it or not, getting physical activity not only helps relieve your tense muscles, but helps your mood too! Your body makes certain chemicals, called endorphins, before and after you work out. They relieve stress and improve your mood.

Eat well. Make sure your children eat healthy fresh fruits, vegetables and an all-around nutritious and balanced diet to ensure they get all the vitamins and minerals they need. We have some wonderful supplements to make sure they're not missing out.

Finally, to reduce the number of ear, nose, and throat infections (as well as to decrease the chance of your children having an asthma episode), keep them as far away as possible from second-hand tobacco smoke and cleaning fumes. Allergens in the air are a little harder to control because you can't have your children just hold their breath. By keeping them away from harmful toxins and man-made allergens, you will keep your children healthier.

  • Get enough rest for your body to have a strong immune system. This is 8-10 hours of sleep for children and 6-8 hours for adults.
  • Wash your hands on a regular basis throughout the day to keep germs from invading your body.
  • Don't drink after other children; this is a typical way of transferring germs and viruses, thus ill-health.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Eat a well balanced diet and to make sure you are not lacking in any vitamins, take a supplement.
  • Stay away from allergens and toxins in the air such as cigarette smoke, cleaning fumes and other breathing irritants.
